The only Meetup group for social dancing in Spokane holds their events at Sons of Norway, a non-profit organization promoting Norwegian Heritage, that just so happens to have a building with rental spaces. The online group has about 81 dancers signed up to get together for events organized by the Meetup host, Dancemaster57 and owner of Spokane Dance Company.
The Meetup website was suggested from another dancer at Dance Street Ballroom’s holiday dance. After a few forwarding of links, half of the DSB regular dancers attended Sons of Norway this night. The floor is massive but not too large making you feel like a fish in the ocean. It is said to be measuring 30′ x 50′ and has flattering lighting. There were about 40 dancers in attendance and the music leaned more towards fox trot and ballroom. The DJ (Dancemaster57) was open to suggestions and let you pick whatever songs you wanted to hear, which was nice and even played Top 40 songs that included Usher and Michael Buble (perhaps?).
The DJ noted that he has improved the sound and music system and hopefully the music selection not that it deters people by any means. The crowd is friendly and surprisingly young, with more girls in attendance in need of more males and leaders! There is a dance scheduled every 1st and third Friday, monthly and regularly.
UPDATE: There is now a dance every Friday night.
